Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has emerged as a transformative platform for reporting and addressing gender-based violence (GBV). Unlike traditional media, social media provides a space for survivors, advocates, and communities to share stories, mobilize support, and hold perpetrators accountable in real time (Bello & Yakubu, 2024). In Giwa Local Government Area, Kaduna State, where cultural norms and stigmatization may hinder GBV reporting, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram play a crucial role in amplifying marginalized voices. Through hashtags, live streams, and advocacy campaigns, social media has become a tool for raising awareness, influencing policy, and fostering societal change. This study explores how social media is utilized to report and combat GBV in Giwa.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of social media to report GBV, challenges such as misinformation, victim-blaming, and inadequate legal frameworks persist. In Giwa Local Government Area, societal taboos and limited access to digital resources further complicate the effective use of social media for GBV reporting. Additionally, there is a lack of empirical evidence on how social media influences awareness, reporting behavior, and policy changes in Giwa. This study investigates these gaps to better understand the role of social media in addressing GBV in the area (Garba & Musa, 2025).
